Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, opened in May 1923, is one of the largest in China. It used to be Shanghai’s main airport until the completion of Pudong Airport, at which point most international flights were transferred to the new facility. Currently, Hongqiao handles the city's domestic flights and operates only a few international routes to Japan and South Korea.
